29 May 2004: Honeymoon in Kyushu

A picture

Day Two: Nagasaki

On the second day, we spent around 4 hours travelling from Beppu to Nagasaki. It was a nice enough route, though; from the countryside of Beppu, through the more urbanised towns of Northern Kyushu, and finally along the coast as we approached Nagasaki.

Such lengthy travel would seem to preclude much exploration but we did our best. We first went to Glover Garden, where the above picture was taken. We did encounter numerous school trip parties, so I think most of the video I took features an audio track of screaming children. It was quite a pleasant place to explore, though.

We noticed that most taxi drivers would turn into your Guide to Nagasaki if you asked them. Frequently, we saw groups of Japanese tourists that were accompanied by a taxi driver explaining the local history, points of interest and so on.

In the evening, we went to Inasayama which offers a great view of Nagasaki but said view is fiendlishly difficult to take a decent picture of. I was more intrigued with the view in the opposite direction, though: the green hills beyond are simply black at night, a faint glow creeping from behind barely providing them with shape.
