The cottage was next to a lock of an old military canal, no longer in use. However, pumps were constantly in operation to keep the depth of the canal in check. So all day and all night, you could hear the rush of water.
Not quite as incredible as our experience at Warcleaves Cottage a couple of years ago, where the whoosh of a river dominated the aural spectrum, but not bad.
