Stoke Newington, The Castle

Although not on our route per se, we spotted an interesting-looking building beyond Clissold Park and decided to go check it out. Wondering if this was some fortress from a bygone era, we were surprised that it was a climbing centre called The Castle.

You might just wonder, though, that perhaps it was something more special in the past, something more historic, ancient. You would be right. It was built in 1852 to be the New River Co. water pumping station.
