Even More Castle

The castle itself is built directly into the rock face, which gives it an imposing appearence. Walter Raleigh was given orders to tear it down to make a new castle, because it was no longer viable as a defensive structure in the era of gunpowder. However, he was so taken with the castle that he offered the Queen an alternative site (what became Elizabeth Castle) and saved Mont Orgueil from destruction.

The residences are in the upper reaches of the castle. In this room, there's a rendition of a royal family tree in metal. The castle's restoration work was controversial but, I must admit, it was one of the best castle "experiences" in memory.
