After Fort William, we had one final journey to make. Even though we'd felt we'd seen enough countryside for one trip, we were still spellbound during the final leg of our journey, between Fort William and Edinburgh. The Highlands of Scotland are amazing.
On arrival in Edinburgh, the weather had gone all grumpy on us. Blondie was in concert in front of Edinburgh Castle and plenty of people were braving the rain for the chance to listen to Debbie Harry. We found a fabulous Italian restaraunt called Il Castello after wandering in the wet weather for some time. Really good food, although pretty busy. Mind you, everywhere seemed busy - it was a Friday night.
Our real explorations began the following morning after the rain had gone away. Edinburgh's Old Town is a delightful place to wander, full of little shopping gems and historic appeal.
We descended into Mary King's Close, a guided tour through the original houses (over 300 years old) that were not demolished - they were built over by newer structures. The guided tour through the site is highly recommended, full of historic detail and atmosphere. The site is deliberately kept gloomy, which lends much to its eerie, grimy feel.
