29 Feb 2004: Hokkaido

The Village

On our third day, we went to the Historical Village of Hokkaido which is not far from Sapporo. It's a large, open area containing restored structures from various periods of Hokkaido's history. It's divided up into several sections: Town, Farm Village, Fishing Village and Mountain Village. There aren't any robots here, so this isn't like Westworld.

Because few people visit during the winter period, the absolute quiet and tranquility of the village is stunning. Occasionally you might catch some caretaker trying to break up ice that has hardened on the steps into one of the buildings, or the horse-drawn carriage that travels around the site.

Many of the buildings can be entered, more so in the summer I believe. However, you need to slip out of your shoes into slippers to explore some of the buildings thoroughly. Not something easily done during the winter months.
