Not very far from our hotel, the Westin Miyako at Keage, is the Nanzenji temple. This giant gate, San-mon, marks the entrance to the temple grounds. To get a grip on the perspective, look at the sad, lonely figure on the upper balcony of the gate. Yes, the one who's waving. What a loser, eh? Yes, it's me.
Joel's hot Kyoto tip: It's worth paying to enter the gate and explore its upper reaches. Be prepared, however, to risk your life in the process. Shoes are not allowed and the stairs were obviously crafted in hell. Steep, dark, narrow and a low ceiling. On the usability scale, it sucks.
